While the staff here are very kind and don’t pressure you into repairs you don’t want, the pricing is extremely high. We were quoted nearly $16k total in repairs for both our 2012 Ford Escape and 2018 Chevy Malibu. I originally brought my Escape in because I knew it needed a new serpentine belt. During the inspection, I was told the pulleys and several other components also needed to be replaced, bringing the total to around $8,000 if everything was fixed. Considering the vehicle’s age, I understand there could be multiple issues, and I ultimately decided to just replace the belt and plan for a new vehicle instead. Even just replacing a simple belt still cost about $400. For the Malibu, we chose to move forward with only an oil change and replacing the tire pressure sensors. The total still came out to around $1,400, and the car was there from roughly 8:30am to 5pm. Because of the cost, we even had to open a credit card account through them to cover the bill. We were also told that fixing everything they found on the Malibu would have cost around $8k as well. To be fair, we did agree to the quoted prices for the work we approved. However, once you sign the quote, there isn’t any flexibility. Just something to be aware of. We were also told the Malibu needed “further inspection” of the suspension. The inspection alone was quoted for a lot. Later, when we got a second opinion from another mechanic, we discovered the issue was literally rocks lodged in the suspension area (see photo). Charging us all of that just to end up removing rocks would have been completely unnecessary. We were also told that several of the other repairs recommended by Smith’s were not needed. Overall, the staff are friendly and the work they perform seems fine, but the pricing here is extremely steep. If you’re on a tight budget like we are, I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion before committing to repairs.
Natalie, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for your kind words about our team—we truly appreciate that. We would like to provide some additional context regarding the recommendations for your Ford Escape so there is a clear understanding of what was found during the inspection. During our evaluation, we identified a number of issues throughout the vehicle, including fluid leaks, worn engine and suspension components, and several overdue maintenance items. More importantly, there were significant safety-related concerns, including severely worn suspension components in both the front and rear (such as loose ball joints and deteriorated bushings), along with failed shocks/struts. In addition to those concerns, we also found advanced rust on the rear frame, including deterioration in a structural area. Because of the overall condition of the vehicle—particularly the structural rust—our team advised that it would not be a wise investment to move forward with those repairs. The larger estimate you referenced reflected the full scope of what would be required to address the issues present, but it was not a recommendation we suggested pursuing. Our goal is always to provide a complete and honest assessment so our customers can make informed decisions—even when that means recommending against repairs. We also want to clarify that the work completed on your Malibu included multiple approved services beyond an oil change and tire pressure sensors, including a wheel alignment and transmission fluid service. Regarding the suspension concern on the Malibu, when further testing is recommended, it is based on symptoms observed during inspection. While something simple can occasionally be the cause, proper testing helps ensure that more serious issues are not overlooked. We understand that repair costs can add up quickly, and we are always working to improve how we communicate findings and options so they feel clear and manageable. We truly appreciate your feedback and your business, and if you would be open to discussing your visit further, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly. Thank you, Smith Automotive

I brought in a used car I was thinking about purchasing. Smith automotive did an inspection and let me know the condition of the car. They did a good job thanks.
Had an unknown, loud noise and my car was struggling to start on very cold mornings. They found and corrected what was causing the noise and installed a new battery. Everyone I dealt with, Russ and Rusty, were great to deal with.
Have used Smith Automotive before and they are great people. Will be using them again for my rear wiper arm.
These guys are great! The pre-work inspection was the best I've ever experienced. I'm almost eager for the next work needed on one of my vehicles!
